In the eighties interbank settlement system was based on the exchange of paper documents without the presence of the intermediate institutions, such as the Clearing House.
By the late eighties and early nineties in Poland many new commercial banks were founded. Along with their growing importance in Polish economy, it became necessary to modernize and standardize the system of settlement. The coordinator of this work became the National Clearing House. Its aim was to build and standardize the system of inter-bank settlements.
